Frequently Asked Questions
How does the word counter work? +
The counter splits your text on any sequence of whitespace — spaces, tabs, and line breaks — and counts the resulting non-empty segments as words. All counting happens live inside your browser as you type. Nothing is sent to a server.
Is my text private? Is it stored anywhere? +
Yes, completely private. All text analysis runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you type or paste is ever transmitted to our servers. You can safely paste confidential documents, legal drafts, or personal writing.
Why does my count differ from Microsoft Word or Google Docs? +
Different tools handle edge cases differently — for example, whether hyphenated words like "well-being" count as one or two words, or how contractions such as "it's" are treated. Small discrepancies of 1–5 words are normal. For large differences, check whether your text contains hidden characters or unusual formatting.
What counts as a word? +
Any unbroken sequence of characters separated by whitespace. This includes plain words, hyphenated compounds ("self-aware"), contractions ("don't"), numbers ("42"), and alphanumeric strings ("H2O"). Single punctuation marks on their own (e.g. a lone dash) may also count as words, matching standard word processor behaviour.
How is reading time calculated? +
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute — a widely cited average for adult silent reading of general prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which reflects a natural conversational or presentation pace. Individual speeds vary; fast readers can exceed 300 wpm.
What is the Readability score? +
The readability label is based on the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula, which measures how easy text is to read using average sentence length and average syllable count per word. "Very Easy" corresponds to a 5th-grade reading level; "Expert" to postgraduate level. For a full breakdown with scores, see the Sentence Counter.
How are estimated pages calculated? +
The page estimate assumes approximately 250 words per page — standard for single-spaced body text at 12pt with 1-inch margins. Your actual page count will vary depending on font size, line spacing, and margin settings in your word processor.
What does "Unique Words" mean? +
Unique word count is the number of distinct words used in your text, regardless of how many times each appears. If you use the word "the" 50 times, it still counts as one unique word. A high ratio of unique words to total words indicates a varied vocabulary; a low ratio suggests repetition.
Does this work on mobile? +
Yes. CountWord.com is fully responsive and works on any smartphone or tablet browser. You can type directly into the text area or paste from your clipboard. The stats update instantly as you type, with no page reload needed.
